WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 11, 2009 GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS Listen, I got good news and bad news First the good news. I just got off the phone with my friend Derrick. He is the promotor of one of the hottest, longest running pool parties on the west coast. The 2009 Party In Palm Springs event is in it's 13th year and it looks like it will sell out all the rooms in about 2 weeks. If you don't know what I am talking about, then please check out all the videos below to show what you missed during the last 2 plus years. Once you view the videos, you tell Derrick, that you are a Black Beach Week news subscriber and that you demand that to be apart of the the 2009 party. That is the good news. Now, this is the bad news. Earlier this week, we had a serious winter storm that hit my local area. I was buried in 7 inches of snow.( I can't wait till my azz is in Brazil for the Carnival in two weeks where it is 95 degrees and women have on bikinis instead of fur coats). Anyway, since it was exactly 3 degrees and I needed to run to the bank by 9 am, I went outside to warm up my car as I have done for years when it gets this cold. Well, some MF must have saw me do this. I went back to my room for 5 minutes and let the car warm up and get that snow melted off my windshield. Well, I came out the door, with some hot cocoa in my hand, and thats when I noticed my freakin car going up the street, without my body inside the car. What!!!!! Ohhhh hellll nawwwwwww!!!!!! I dropped my cocoa because I could not believe it. I looked around to make sure it was my car and it was missing from that spot I was warming it up in and it was blank! At that point I imagined myself doing the old school Steve Austin - Bionic - Six Million Dollar Man slow motion running routine to catch my car and pull whoever was taking away and then doing one of those wrestling finishing moves on him(or her). But it was too late, he got me. I called the police and two days later, my car was found undamaged. They took my house keys and left the car keys inside so I had to spend a day getting all my locks at my home changed. So that ended in good news. But let me tell you stand a I can't freakin thief. Forget all that "no snitch bullsh*t" I hear around in many of our communities. You take something that does not belong to you, then I am snitching and especially if you take mine. Anyway, just to prove my point, I was in Brazil a few months ago in Rio and Salvador setting some stuff up for Memorial Day Weekend. I always have my camera with me. Anyway, I was walking out of the gym on the strip when I heard two girls yelling to get him . I could not understand what was happening just heard broken portuguese, but I turned around and about 100 yards away was guy running at full speed TOWARDS ME!! At this point, I didnt know still what was going on. I looked at his hands to make sure he didnt have anything and kind of sized him up just in case he did try to come at me I could take him. So I prepared to make my stand. But then, something else happened. I saw about 20 more people come around this building running behind him all coming towards me !!!! Now have you ever seen those cartoons, where the cartoon character feet and legs starts making fast running moves in circles and then takes off followed by the body and head 4 seconds later. Well that was me!! I took off I kept hearing someone tell me to stop him!!br> So I stopped and turned around and noticed that the crowd was chasing this guy. I took out my camcorder and tried to turn it on him as fast as I could because they all went right passed me and had caught the dude and was about to tear his ass up. I had to get this on tape. I mean women, young people, old people and etc. I am like what the hell is going on. The police immediately had to go in and save the guy ( who I found out later stole a cell phone and some money off the table and ran off. The funny thing was that people saw me with a video camera and begged me to take a photo of him and video tape him and place it on YouTube to show the world that they don't tolerate theives You know what? When you steal and it's front of me be prepared to be truly embarrassed. Check out the fallout from what happens when you do something this stupid. MONDAY FEBRUARY 9, 2009 THE DEATH OF BLACK SPRING BREAK EVENTS Listen, some of my long time readers knew that when I first started working here, all of our Black Beach Week events focused on nothing but black spring break events such as the Freaknik, Black College Reunion, Kappa Beach Party and many others. Later, as the website grew we were the first to tell you about other events but make no mistake we all came from the Freaknik era. That was our baby. It was a VERY sad day to see that event leave. The last FREAKNIK event was 10 years ago. whooawwww the memories Ohhhh man and who could ever forget that time we shut BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI DOWN with the Black Spring Break of 1999/2000 when we had 95,000 people show up when the city only expected a few hundred people? Theno f course the Kappa Beach Party was 250,000 strong about 8 years ago when we had that FREE beach party with about 30 celebrities. and now it doesnt look like 250 people came the last time. Unfortunately, there have been other events that are about to make me sing that Boyz 2 Men song. "It's so hard to say goodbye". Kappa Beach Party is officially dead and we will not be promoting it any more. It looks like we are in the final years for the Black College Reunion in Daytona unless it can be jolted back to life. The Miami Springfest was hot for years but Radio One ( the chief promotor) sold the station in Miami and therefore we had to shut it down. The B.ET. Spring Bling looks like it will still pop this year (announcement will be made late this week on dates and location ) but its sad to go from 5 events to one. MONDAY OCTOBER 6, 2008 PREPARE FOR YOUR WINTER EVENTS AS BLACK SKI EVENTS DOMINATE 2009 Who says you can only have fun in the sun? There seems to be an explosion of different types of black ski events for different areas of the country. The Black Ski Summitt is the largest and longest running black ski event in the world. Black Cruise Week.com There used to be only 1 or 2 major cruises for people of color. Now there are around 30-40 major cruises with all types of special niches within the black community depending on your interest. That means if you like comedy, there is a comedy cruise for you. If you are into books, there is a black book cruise for you. If you are into networking with successful business owners and professionals we have the NPN business cruise. If you just graduated college, there is a graduation cruise that is launching for the first time this year. Like I said, the website Black Cruise Week is in catch up mode and I'm working on it right now. But when it's finished you can add BLACK CRUISE WEEK as well as Black Beach Week to your favorite list. -------------------------------------------------------- WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 12, 2008 HERE IS WHAT PISSES ME OFF REGARDING THE WAY OUR BLACK BEACH WEEK EVENTS ARE TREATED Hey whus up How are you doing today? I know I always talk about the postive side of all the black beach week events but I also have to tell you about a few things that just completely rattles my freakin nerves. I don't know if you even noticed but there are always political and society pressures to shut all of our events down. Whenever there is a Black Beach Week event, we are the only group where they have to place barricades around certain streets, telling you where you can and cannot go on a PUBLIC STREET. We are the only group where laws are STRICTLY enforced vs. any other gathering. We are the only group where they have the exact numbers of how many people arrested, how many tickets were issued and etc. You will never find those mumbers for another "non-black" event such as Mardi Gras, Harley Bike Week or any spring break function. I guarantee you that for each day of Black Bike Week, Black College Reunion, Memorial Day Weekend in Miami, BET Spring Bling, the media will have all our exact crime statistic numbers. You know last year at the Kentucky Derby, it was announced that they were going to try and kill the popular Derby Cruising because it was getting out of hand. So they have doing a slow kill on that event. I get alot of media quesions on whether I think it's racial. Hell yeah, it's racial because no other group has to withstand the scrutiny that they place on us. We constantly have to go to court to always prove something when we should not have to. In fact, I always tell my critics, that if you treat other groups just like you treat us, you will never hear a peep from me because it will be fair. But to always single us out for any small thing is nothing but some racial bull*hit. People always ask me Terrance, how come I never heard about anything that happened at Springfest or Black College Reunion or the BET Spring Bling that just passed? Do you really want to know why? Because it was all positive. There was nothing bad for the media to report. But believe me, had there been a fight or other common occurance that happens during an event that brings 350,000 people it would have landed on CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC and every other news outlet. Now, I know for a fact that we have a ton of Black Beach Week events planned this year. I want you to check out how the event is portrayed in the media. Watch the media spit out crime stats as if to say " we expect you to commit crimes", but we will only put out crime stats for black beach week events only. Now I finished my rant, let's get back to the fun. TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 11, 2007 BLACK BEACH WEEK FLASHBACK: THE DEATH OF FREAKNIK For many years, especially during the late 80's and early 90's, the Freaknik was considered THE hot spot that many either heard about or was frequently visited to by the hundreds of thousands of black college students (and others) every April. For many of those years, it lived up to it's name. It was Freak-Nik!!! There were the wild parties on the street, the dancing, the picture taking and of course the freaking. In fact so many came in 1992, Atlanta was almost shut down. It became an event that heard about through out the world as it was the home of CNN news. In an effort to tone down some of Freaknik ways, there were numerous attempts to change the nature of the event. They tried to change the name(Black Cultural Something or Freedom Festival...and a few others that didn't quite work out). There were even city sponsored job fairs and event organized block parties. It was a good effort..... However...... What the city organizers and others failed to realize was that people didn't come to Freaknik to look for jobs or even take on a political agenda. They came for a wild party. It was as simple as that. Much like the New Orleans Mardi-Gras ( an event that celebrates getting wild every year) People came to get away from school or work and have a great time. But things changed... drastically. Soon after the Olympics in Atlanta....the event went down hill. The political figures in Atlanta wanted to call a halt to Freaknik. So they established ways to make the event frustrating. Road blocks through out the city made traffic a huge mess. You could not do anything or go anywhere without staying in traffic for hours. Then other events started to pop up. The Black College Reunion in Daytona and the Kappa Beach party in Galveston, Texas were now grabbing many of the Atlanta Freaknik participants. The 1999 Freaknik was considered the worst of all and put the final nail in the coffin. Although Freaknik has been long gone, there are other events that have even surpassed the 250,000 plus numbers that participated in this one spring break event each year. In the 90,s there were only 3 or 4 events which flourished during this period. However, today we have close to 50 events which brings that same party atmosphere. Even with that said, if you ask anyone 30 years or older what event was always the hottest event you had to attend during your college years, FREAKNIK will always remain #1. Order now before they are all sold out. ---------------------------------------------------------- SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 9, 2007 WHAT? LIGHT SKINNED PEOPLE ONLY! DARK SKINNED PARTICIPANTS ARE NOT ALLOWED? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE Heyyyy. Whats up. I have a small personal story to tell you. About 4-5 weeks ago, I decided to take a weekend trip to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Now, I had rumors that there some sort of silent interacial strife between light and dark skinned Dominicans. Now I didn't really go there to find out, I was just going to have a little fun because I had never been there before. Now let me tell you this, If you have never seen me, I am of the lighter skin persuasion but NOT caucasion type. (Now just as a side note, we light skinned people really did rule the 80's and early 90's and in 2008 we making a comeback.) But seriously for my particular taste I am attracted to darker skinned women. I have NOTHING against light skinned women, but I have a preference for dark skinned ebony sistahs..... Now the thing that was so interesting was that when I arrived at my hotel, I asked the hotel clerk ( who was a Dominican black man) could he point me to some of the nightlife in the area. I told him that I a had a list of clubs I had heard about. He looked about my list of 5 clubs and scratched 4 of them off. I asked him "what was wrong?" ....he said that those places do not let black people in ( although he told me I might pass since I am light skinned) . I was like you are kidding me? I felt like I was in that Spike Lee movie "School Daze." So I went to the club and I had no problem getting passed the bouncer or doorman. I was dressed nice, I paid my money and went in. But here is where it gets really interesting. There were NO dark skinned women there. In fact, there were no dark skinned fellas either except for 2 ( who looked like they might have known somebody) ...I then went to 2 other semi upscale clubs with the same result. Now, let me say that it could be that no other dark skinned people came to the club, but that is highly unlikely. Now here is where it REALLY gets interesting. Just by sheer coincidence, I came to the DR at the same time some black american employees from the US EMBASSY where going to a club called the Loft. Well one of the girls had cornrolls in her hair and they would not let her in. They picked the wrong people to mess with that night because they were so pissed off that they did something that other embassy never really do. They put out a press release banning all Embassy workers from going to that club and circulated it worldwide. You must read this. The U.S. embassy in the Dominican Republic has barred its employees from a popular Santo Domingo disco, saying the nightclub routinely shuts its doors to blacks. Roland Bullen, the embassy chargé d'affaires, made the announcement Monday after three black embassy employees were denied entrance to the Loft club July 22 |
